RESALE: The housing market is driven by consumer demand. The consumer wants product longevity and lower lifecycle costs. Those who cannot offer such, will be forced to reduce their profit. 1 The struggling housing market has made 70 percent of respondents more or much more inclined to buy a green home over a conventional home. 2 A report by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development found that the costs of green building are often misunderstood, and even overestimated by as much as 300% by builders. 3 While the environmental and human health benefits of green building have been widely recognized, a comprehensive report confirms that minimal increases in upfront costs of about 2% to support green design would, on average, result in life cycle savings of 20% of total construction costs -- more than ten times the initial investment. 4 The National Association of Realtors has a designation for professionalism in the GREEN category, including brokers. This is a huge sign for where things are heading. |
