A few points to consider and encourage you to delve more into the subject:

Please note: These are facts based on research, sources can be found on the cost conclusion page.

1 52 percent of green homes cost "about the same" as a comparable non-green home, and 20 percent cost less.

2 More than half (56 percent) of those surveyed who had bought green homes earn less than $75,000 per year; 29 percent earn less than $50,000.

3 While the environmental and human health benefits of green building have been widely recognized, a comprehensive report confirms that minimal increases in upfront costs of about 2% to support green design would, on average, result in life cycle savings of 20% of total construction costs -- more than ten times the initial investment.

4 SOME Builder discounts for volume purchases, such as grade B, non-FSC lumber, a lower quality material, is actually not cost effective when one considers the factor of sustainability.

5 Many newly constructed houses are built with only low build cost in mind, may contain harmful chemicals and cheap, single purpose materials. The quality of living in many new houses leaves much to be desired and the longevity of many of the cheap materials used is questionable.
